Thermoware Buying Guide for Importers and Brands

30 October 2026 · RRB World® Manufacturing Team · 6 min read

Thermoware — insulated casseroles, chapati boxes, kettles, flasks and lunch boxes — is one of the most requested categories from wholesalers, retail chains and private label brands, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Two casseroles can look identical in a photo and behave completely differently on the table. This guide sets out what to specify, check and ask before you order in bulk or under your own brand. It is written by the team at RRB World®, a stainless steel and thermoware manufacturer in Wazirpur, Delhi, operating since 1989.

1. Know the four constructions

  • Stainless inner and outer, double-wall vacuum — the premium build. Best retention, most durable, highest cost.
  • Stainless inner, plastic outer — lighter and decorative (prints, foil finishes, colours). The volume seller in most retail markets.
  • Foam-insulated body — insulating foam between walls instead of vacuum. Lower cost, shorter retention.
  • Insulated carry systems — steel lunch containers in an insulated bag or jacket. Practical for tiffin and corporate ranges.

2. The specification checklist

CapacityStated in ml for the inner pot, e.g. 750 / 1500 / 2500 / 3500 ml. Ask whether it is brim-full or working capacity.
Inner materialSS 304 or SS 202, and the sheet thickness. Request a mill test certificate for export.
InsulationDouble-wall vacuum, double-wall air gap, or foam-filled. This drives both retention and price.
OuterStainless steel (mirror or matte), or plastic with print / foil / colour. Check the plastic is food-safe where it touches food.
Lid and sealSteel or plastic lid, silicone gasket, locking clips. The seal matters as much as the walls for retention.
Retention claimInsist on a stated test: start temperature, fill level and hours. Test a sample yourself before a bulk order.
BrandingLaser engraving on steel, print on plastic outers, and your brand on the box.
PackagingRetail box size and print, barcode, inner pack quantity, export carton dimensions and weight.

3. Treat retention claims with care

“Keeps food hot for 24 hours” means nothing without the test conditions. Retention depends on starting temperature, how full the vessel is, how often it is opened and the room temperature. Ask the supplier for the conditions behind any figure, then test a sample the same way. On our own catalogue we state retention only where the product is rated for it — our vacuum bottles, for example, are listed model by model.

4. Branding and packaging decide sell-through

For a brand or retailer the box is half the product. Agree the retail box artwork, barcode, inner pack quantity and export carton size before production starts. The most efficient route is a single supplier that designs the product, manufactures it, packs it to your brand requirements and delivers it box-packed and ready to sell — which is how we run private label and OEM thermoware orders.

5. Export paperwork and compliance

Plan the commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin from day one, and agree the Incoterm (FOB, CIF or EXW). Check what your market requires for food-contact materials — for example the EU framework regulation on food-contact materials, US FDA food-contact rules, or the GCC requirements for the UAE and Saudi Arabia — and ask whether test reports are available or need to be commissioned.

Thermoware buyer FAQs

What is thermoware?

Thermoware is insulated serveware and drinkware that keeps food or drinks hot or cold: casseroles (hot pots), chapati boxes, kettles, vacuum flasks and insulated lunch boxes. Most quality thermoware has a stainless steel inner, an insulating layer — vacuum or foam — and a steel or plastic outer.

Is vacuum insulation better than foam insulation?

For retention, yes. A double-wall vacuum body removes the air that conducts heat, so it holds temperature for longer than a foam-filled body of the same size. Foam-insulated casseroles are lighter on cost and are common for decorative plastic-outer ranges. Specify which you need — they are priced differently.

Which steel grade should the inner pot be?

For export and premium retail, specify SS 304 (18/8) for every food-contact part. SS 202 is cheaper and used in some domestic ranges. Put the grade on the purchase order and ask for a mill test certificate.

What HS code is used to export thermoware from India?

Vacuum flasks and other complete vacuum vessels are generally classified under HS 9617, and stainless steel household articles such as non-vacuum casseroles under HS 7323.93. Classification depends on the exact construction, so confirm the code with your customs broker before shipping.

What is a typical MOQ for private label thermoware?

Branded runs typically start from around 500 pieces per SKU at RRB World, with trial quantities possible on existing designs. New moulds, custom colours or printed outers raise the MOQ. The exact figure is confirmed at quotation.

Can thermoware arrive packed and ready to sell?

Yes. A full-service manufacturer will pack each piece in your branded retail box with barcode and inner/outer cartons, so the shipment can go straight to shelf or a marketplace warehouse. RRB World offers this end to end — design, manufacturing, brand packaging and delivery.
