SS 304 vs SS 202 Stainless Steel: Which Grade is Better for Kitchenware?
1 July 2026 · RRB World® Manufacturing Team · 5 min read
If you're sourcing stainless steel kitchenware — for retail, OEM, or export — you've likely encountered two grades: SS 304 and SS 202. Both are stainless steel, but they differ in corrosion resistance, food safety, and price. This guide is written by the team at RRB World®, a stainless steel manufacturer in Wazirpur, Delhi with 35+ years of experience.
What is SS 304 Stainless Steel?
SS 304 belongs to the 300 series of austenitic stainless steel and is called “18/8 steel” because of its composition: 18–20% Chromium and 8–10.5% Nickel. The chromium creates an anti-rust oxide layer; the nickel adds strength and corrosion resistance. SS 304 is non-magnetic, food-grade (FSSAI/BIS compliant), and the global standard for water bottles, tiffin boxes, plates, and cookware.
What is SS 202 Stainless Steel?
SS 202 is a more economical alternative in the 200 series. It replaces some nickel with manganese: 17–19% Chromium, 3.5–5.5% Nickel (less than SS 304), and 7.5–10% Manganese. While manganese maintains the austenitic structure, it does not provide the same corrosion resistance as nickel. SS 202 is still stainless steel — but with lower tolerance for moisture, salt, and acid.
SS 304 vs SS 202: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Property | SS 304 | SS 202 |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel content | 8–10.5% | 3.5–5.5% |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent | Moderate |
| Food grade (BIS) | Yes — standard | Acceptable, verify |
| Suitable for export | Yes (EU, USA, GCC) | Generally No |
| Price vs SS 304 | — | 15–25% lower |
| Rusts with salt/acid? | No | Possible over time |
| Best for | All food-contact items | Commercial / bulk / dry |
Corrosion Resistance: The Key Difference
SS 304's higher nickel content creates a stronger passive oxide layer. This protects against saltwater, acidic foods (tomatoes, lemon, tamarind, curd), chlorine-based cleaners, and humid or coastal environments. SS 202, with less nickel, can develop pitting and rust at welded joints or laser-etched areas if exposed to these conditions long-term.
Food Safety: Which is Safer?
Both grades are used in food-contact applications in India, but for critical items (water bottles, tiffins, storage containers), the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recommends SS 304. SS 304 is non-reactive, does not leach metals into food, and meets IS 14756:2000 for kitchen utensils. SS 202 can leach trace manganese in acidic food conditions over prolonged use.

RRB World's Recommendation
At RRB World®, we manufacture both SS 304 and SS 202 at our factory in Wazirpur, Delhi. For OEM and private label clients, we always recommend SS 304 for any food-contact product. The 15–25% material cost difference is negligible when weighed against returns, refunds, and brand-damaging reviews from premature corrosion. Contact us for a custom quote on either grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SS 304 or SS 202 better for kitchen utensils?
SS 304 is better for kitchen utensils that contact food directly. With 8–10% nickel, SS 304 is more corrosion-resistant, food-safe, and durable. SS 202 uses less nickel (3.5–5.5%) and can corrode over time with acidic foods, salt water, or in humid environments.
Is SS 202 food grade?
SS 202 is generally food-safe for short-term, non-acidic contact. For prolonged contact with acidic foods (tomatoes, lemon, curd), saltwater, or for export to EU/USA markets with strict food safety laws, SS 304 is the recommended food-grade standard.
What is the price difference between SS 304 and SS 202?
SS 202 is typically 15–25% cheaper than SS 304 because it contains less nickel. For large bulk orders, SS 202 reduces material cost significantly, but at the expense of corrosion resistance and long-term durability.
Which stainless steel grade is used for water bottles?
SS 304 (18/8 food-grade stainless steel) is the standard for water bottles, tiffin boxes, and drinkware in India and internationally. It is non-reactive, does not impart taste or odor, and meets BIS/FSSAI food safety requirements.
Can I use SS 202 for export products?
Most export markets (EU, USA, UK, Australia, UAE) require SS 304 for food-contact steel products. SS 202 generally does not meet international food safety certifications required by importers in these markets. Confirm the grade requirement with your buyer before manufacturing.
